Course Description
Physical and mechanical properties of soil and soil testing: formation of the soil, physical and mechanical properties of soils and soil testing. Theory of consolidation: choice of the type of foundations. Design of the shallow foundations: isolated footings, combined footings and strap footings. To provide an introduction to soil mechanics engineering this includes soil types under foundations, the physical properties of soil ,its behavior under load and uses of soil as a construction material and the essential items to evaluate the shear strength of soil and its practical application for bearing capacity and design of footings. Prerequisite: ARE 212
